North Carolina Felon Charged with Gun Possession - Posted 8/11/2010
A Mount Olive, North Carolina man involved in several shootings from 2007 to 2009 has pled guilty to unlawful possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. The maximum penalty for the charge is 10 years in prison; however, if deemed an Armed Career Criminal, the defendant faces the possibility of life imprisonment.
 
Jacksonville Man Sentenced for Illegal Gun Possession - Posted 8/11/2010
A Jacksonville, Florida man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The defendant, who was apprehended by police responding to a call of shots fired, was designated an Armed Career Criminal for multiple prior felony convictions, including battery in a detention facility, resisting a police officer with violence, and two prior sales of cocaine—all of which prohibit him from carrying a firearm and/or ammunition.
 
PSN Maine Honored for Gun Sellers Awareness Campaign Efforts - Posted 8/11/2010
Maine's Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, PSN Maine, received the Project Safe Neighborhoods Achievement Award for Outstanding Media Outreach Campaign for its Gun Sellers Awareness Campaign (GSAC). PSN Maine launched GSAC in 2005 to educate gun owners of the consequences of selling firearms to prohibited persons and to distribute Gun Seller Safety Kits, which provide guidance on the most responsible way to dispose of firearms in unregulated private sales.
 
Two California Agencies Receive PSN Achievement Awards - Posted 8/11/2010
Two Bay Area agencies are the recipients of Project Safe Neighborhoods Achievement Awards. The Youth Intervention Network in Antioch, California received the Outstanding Community Involvement Award for its initiative to support youth identified as likely to commit or become victims of violent crimes without prevention assistance. The San Francisco Police Department received the Outstanding Local Police Department Involvement Award for its innovative violence-reduction strategy.
 
PSN Achievement Award Recipients Announced - Posted 8/11/2010
The Department of Justice announced the 24 recipients of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Achievement Awards in a ceremony hosted by Acting Deputy Attorney General Gary G. Grindler at the PSN National Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Recipients were chosen from a large pool of nominations submitted by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices across the country.
 
Orlando Man Indicted for Shooting at Police Helicopter - Posted 8/11/2010
An Orlando, Florida man has been charged with the attempted destruction of an aircraft, using or carrying a firearm during or in relation to a crime of violence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The defendant was arrested after firing shots at a police helicopter that had been dispatched to his home in response to a call of shots fired. If convicted on all counts, the defendant faces 40 years in federal prison.
 
Florida Career Criminal Sentenced to 20 Years - Posted 7/7/2010
A Lake Wales, Florida man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for conspiring to rob three local businesses. The defendant, who has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1980, was found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and one count of possessing, carrying, using, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
 
PSN Training Held in Guam, Northern Mariana Islands - Posted 7/6/2010
More than 200 prosecutors and local law enforcement officers from the Districts of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands recently attended Project Safe Neighborhoods training. Sessions focused on updates in search and seizure law, identification of gang members in the military, interviewing techniques, firearms identification and trafficking, investigation and prosecution of methamphetamine cases, prosecuting gang cases, and burglary and home invasion offenses.
 
Tribal Police Dismantle Cocaine Ring in Tohono O’odham Nation - Posted 6/2/2010
The Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department led a multijurisdictional task force in an early morning sweep of Sells, Arizona following a 5-month investigation into a network of alleged cocaine dealers. Ten people were arrested and seven homes searched by tribal police, who seized weapons, vehicles, and undetermined quantities of cash, cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana.
 
Burglary Suspect Sentenced Under Project Safe Neighborhoods - Posted 8/20/2009
A Chattanooga, Tennessee man suspected in several residential burglaries in late 2007 and early 2008 has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. The defendant, who had a prior felony conviction as a sex offender when he was apprehended for stealing 8 guns from one of the places he burglarized, was prosecuted through the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative as a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
