Federal, state and local partners engaged in the national PSN initiative have
available to them a wide variety of no-cost training and technical assistance
support. Access to the PSN-related services of each of the organizations listed
below is available through the U.S. Attorney's Office PSN Coordinator (for
state and local agencies), and through the FEAT Points of Contact at the
Department of Justice (for PSN Coordinators).
| Training Title: | APPA/PSN Project | | Description: | The American Probation and Parole Association will develop training and technical assistance for probation and parole professionals and allied agencies to help them prevent supervised offenders from possessing and using guns. Information about the training and technical assistance opportunities, once they are developed, will be posted on the APPA Web site (www.appa-net.org). Case studies and descriptions of innovative strategies employed by probation, parole, and related agencies will also be available via the Web site. Classes can be designed for law enforcement officers, prosecutors, or a combination of both groups. The curriculum varies by site and is tailored to the needs of the jurisdiction requesting the training. A 2½- to 3-day training program will be delivered to approximately 50 local prosecutors and allied professionals. Training topics will include club drugs, clandestine labs and their impact on communities, Internet drug distribution, and gang and gun crime. The latest approaches to prevention and treatment such as drug courts and treatment alternatives, and the state of current knowledge about addiction, also will be offered. The goal of this course is to improve the level of crime gun interdiction and prosecution through a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes team building among course participants. The course focuses the resources of each partner on initiating, perfecting, and prosecuting cases involving firearms traffickers and armed violent offenders. First, COSMOS works with local jurisdictions to design and conduct program development workshops. Program logic models are used in the workshops to help local planners identify their youth firearms problems, and to develop multiple strategies to address those problems. Next, one-on-one follow-up activities are provided to assist local law enforcement, justice system, and community stakeholders in implementing their comprehensive strategies. Then, COSMOS helps local planners use outcome measures to assess how successful the strategies are in reducing youth gun crimes. Delivery of technical assistance may consist of 1) one-on-one consultations by telephone or e-mail; 2) on-site training workshops; 3) analysis of data transmitted to COSMOS; or 4) on-site planning group meetings. | | Provider: | COSMOS Corporation | | | | Training Title: | Support from Regional Community Policing Institutes | | Description: | Regional Community Policing Institutes (RCPIs), established by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, will provide training on the role of guns in specific types of crime and how this crime can be reduced. Utilizing their past experience in rural areas and public housing, four RCPIs will develop and offer training and technical assistance for use in domestic violence incidents and gang violence with youth. This assistance focuses on all aspects of strategic problem solving including assessing the problem, implementing strategies, monitoring implementation, and evaluating the impact of PSN. In this context, technical assistance is often delivered on-site using a cadre of experienced individuals involved with PSN working in a peer-to-peer context. In addition, technical assistance may be provided through phone calls.
